I was in England because of the U2 tour. A few weeks before the trip, my friend Alan suggested I visit Liverpool in the event Liverpool made it through to the fourth round of the League Cup. Through on penalties in the third round, this win opened the chance to go to Liverpool and see LFC play Bournemouth. Alan secured the Kop-end ticket for me and was generous in letting me stay at his flat and show me around for a Beatles tour (Penny Lane, Strawberry Field, 20 Forthlin Road, Mendips, St. Peter’s Church in Woolton, the Cavern Club, and the Beatles Story in the Liverpool Museum). As a Liverpool FC supporter himself, Alan also took me to Melwood (where I saw the squad train), the Academy, and Anfield (where the new main stand is being constructed). Lastly, I was able to enjoy Sefton Park, see the ring of memory for the 96 who died at Hillsborough, walk around Albert Dock, have drinks on the rooftop of the Titanic Hotel where the tragic ship was registered, and visit the Museum of Liverpool. It’s quickly becoming one of my favourite cities to visit. I really enjoyed the pie at Homebaked (a co-operative bakery in Anfield) and the Fish and Chips Shop at Penny Lane (where the Beatles used to eat).
